Joseph August Knip was a Dutch painter. His father, Nicolaas Frederik Knip, was also a painter and served as Joseph’s first teacher. In 1847, Joseph became the Drawing Master to Napoleon III of France.

Joseph August Knip went blind in 1832. After this, he was given a pension by the King of the Netherlands and lived in France with his wife. One of his daughters was Henriette Ronner-Knip, who is known for miniatures.
