Pierre-Joseph Redoute, was a self-taught painter and botanist from Belgium, known for his watercolours of flowers which were published as engravings. He was nicknamed “the Raphael of Flowers” and has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time.

During the French Revolution, he was one of the few who survived and continued painting through the unrest. He gained international recognition for his precise plant paintings and flourished with his influence from nobility pursuing artistic pursuits. His clients included Marie Antoinette, Napoleon’s wives, Louis Philippe I, and more.
