Watanabe Shotei was active as an editor and contributor to the art magazine called “The World of Art” in 1890. He also illustrated the first issue of the magazine and contributed with ten other artists.

He received many awards, and they were shown in Japan and out of Japan. He served as a major inspiration to the following generation of Nihonga artists, notably Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) and Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878-1973).
